About Pleural Plaques
Pleural plaques are a form of scarring of the outer lining of the lung. Although pleural plaques do not normally cause any symptoms they are an indication of previous exposure to asbestos.
People diagnosed with Pleural plaques, often become anxious about whether they will develop a fatal asbestos related illness in the future, such as mesothelioma.
In the past it was possible for people suffering from pleural plaques to recover compensation. A recent test case in the House of Lords decided that compensation can no longer be awarded for pleural plaques. However, there has been increasing pressure on the government to change this ruling.
The limited government scheme for certain people who have been diagnosed with plural plaques is now closed.
If you have been diagnosed with pleural plaques or any other form of asbestos related disease you should still contact us for free expert legal advice as you may have been misdiagnosed.
Asbestos was used for many purposes as it has useful qualities. It is flame resistant, a good insulator and acid resistant but people who worked with it are at risk. If you worked in the following industries you may have been exposed to asbestos:
- Plumbers
- Power station workers
- Ship yard workers
- Thermal insulation engineers
- Asbestos manufacturing workers
- Building workers
- Carpenters
- Demolition Workers
- Electricians
- Gas fitters
- Heating and Ventilation Engineers
- Joiners
- Laggers
- Painters and decorators
- People who have lived and played near asbestos factories when they were children
- People who have washed workers overalls
- People working in places where other workers are handling asbestos
The most common uses of asbestos were paste for lagging pipe work and boards to create fire walls.

Mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis are the most serious and will therefore be at the top end of the compensation level. Mesothelioma is usually of shorter duration than lung cancer or asbestosis and is often fatal within a short space of time. Lung cancer and asbestosis are likely to have a fatal outcome but the symptoms often continue for several years. |
